West Indies prevailed over New Zealand through the Super Over in the Super Eights Match at Pallekele on Monday.

West Indies overcame New Zealand through a Super Over win to keep their hopes of making it to the Semis alive! It was a thrilling tie at Pallekele for the second time in this tournament with once again New Zealand at the wrong end of a Super Over.

The West Indies will play their opening game in the T20 World Cup on Saturday against Australia and the cricketing world will be looking on with interest. Their long suffering fans have felt, for a long time, that their once all-conquering side has too long languished in the nether regions of the world cricket rankings.

It wasn’t that New Zealand were totally outplayed during their two Test-match series against West Indies, as the 2-0 result may suggest. It was just that every time West Indies found themselves on the back foot or the Kiwis began to look threatening, someone or the other from the Caribbean camp stepped up to hand West Indies the upper hand.

The West Indies completed an emphatic nine-wicket victory at North Sound to take a 1-0 lead in this two-test series against New Zealand. The tourists were unable to fulfill the promise of their laudable fourth day performance and fell for 272, leaving the hosts the straightforward task of scoring 102 for victory.

It would have been reasonable to assume that after not playing in whites for a year and a half that Chris Gayle would have gradually eased himself into the test game. But anyone who harboured such thoughts would have been taken aback by the way he went out to bat on today's second day at North Sound.

The West Indies claimed two late wickets to place themselves on level terms with the visitors at stumps on todays first day at North Sound. On a very pedestrian day when the spectators who ventured to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium would have struggled to stay awake, Martin Guptil scored a painstaking 97 to guide New Zealand to 232/4.

At last, the West Indies have something to cheer about. Everything went wrong for them in England in both the Tests and ODIs, and they needed this victory against New Zealand to boost their confidence.

West Indies won the fifth and final ODI at St Kitts by 20 runs to complete the ODI Series with a crushing margin of 4-1. New Zealand were once again bamboozled by the spin of Sunil Narine, who claimed a 2nd consecutive Man of the Match award and also the Player of the Series award.
